Blows smoke and dies

  • hi,

Sorry for writing in English, my Deutsch is too basic...

My poor Schwalbe starts well in the morning but blows a lot of smoke for the first 10 minutes. Later its cleaner but when the engine is hot it dies and wont restart until it is cool.

Any idea what this might be? I changed the spark plug recently to an NGK equivalent but I am not 100% sure it is the right one...could this be it?

    Thanks for your advice,

    adam

  • Wich carburetor do you have? Adjusting yours new: You have 1 or 2 Screws, one for gas (not in any carburator) and one for fuel-air proportion. The second is important now. If your carburator is wrong adjusted, turn the second screw carefully left - but before you do it; get sure your Choke close in right way. In closing position normally it had a difference about 1-2mm (choke lever).

  • eset, you're saying it starts well in the morning. Do you use the "starter carb" lever for that (often referred to as "choke")? If you don't, that'll be one more indication that it's running too rich on idle.

Running too rich can be a result of poor adjustments, please tell us make and model of your carburator so we can advise how to fix that. It's probably a BVF 16N1-something.

It can also be the result of some minor defect - like the carburator's fuel intake valve not closing properly, or a clogged air filter, or something like that.

  • Hi Adam,

first of all a little question to you: Can you read and understand German?

If that's the case, search for the so-called Wärmeproblem (heat problem). The standard description of this problem that the Simson does start fine without problems but after some kilometers the engine just stops and you have to wait some time so that the engine can cool down. After that the Simson will run again (for some time). This problem often relates to malfunctioning parts in the breaker ignition.

Could you please answer the following questions so that we know some more facts about your Schwalbe:

    • Which kind of Schwalbe do you have?
    • Which year of manufacture does it have exactly? Or which exact model do you have? KR51, KR51/1, KR51/2?
    • Do you know which kind of ignition your Schwalbe has? An electric one or a breaker one?

Please don't turn any screws on your carburetor. It won't change its configuration just from one second to the other.

Furthermore your spark plug needs its time to change the colour. If everything is fine, the spark plug will change its colour to a nice fawn brown.

    Greetings,
    Sara

  • hi,

    I understand a little German, I can ask my girlfriend to help. I have a 1982 KR51/2E

As for the ignition - I dont know how to tell the difference between electric vs breaker.

  • OK, foget my last post. It was for the original carburator.

The one you have is the "new" replacement one from Bing.

Please make sure that the bowden cable to the choke is easy to move when not pulled or rather has some tolerance.
Otherwise it might the open all the time causing you the kind of problems you described.

  • On the carburator it says:
    BING 17
    17/15/1104

    Is that the right information?
    adam

That is the right information. But your carburetor may be the problem itself. That carburetor is not intended to work with your Schwalbe. Some say it is nevertheless possible, especially with the KR51/2 (the last Schwalbe type), but I guess there are still some changes to be made on your Bing carburetor to work on your Schwalbe.

In my opinion it would be the best to try the original carburetor on your Schwalbe. That would be the BVF 16N1-12.

  • I have loosened the cable a little so it moves freely when closed. It sticks a little when I shut the choke off. I will keep an eye on this. However, I think its worthwhile considering these other issues. The "Wärmeproblem" rossinchen describes sounds pretty close to what is happening...

  • ok, thanks rossinchen for the advice. Is there somewhere online or in Berlin I can buy a BVF 16N1-12?

Also, if anyone knows a good Simson repair shop in Berlin I would be happy to know where just in case...

Many thanks to you all for such quick and generous advice. I will look into all the issues raised and if I get stuck I'll come back...maybe also after learning a little more German...

    thanks again :)

  • You are from Berlin. One of the moderators, totoking, lives there as well and has its own little and private garage. Maybe you could write him a message and he can give you some information about dealers in Berlin or even some advice.
