Problems with horn and blinker - Simson Schwalbe K51

    Hi,
    I have seen some posts that may answer my problem, but I do not really understand German very well, so I ask it in English. I am sorry if my problem has already been answered in German.


    My problem is as follows. I bought a restored Simson Schwalbe KR51/2 in July in Stuttgart and drove it to Holland (all without any problem). Since a few weeks, my horn and blinker do not function anymore, and the green ignition light (next to the ignition key) is very weak.


    I have brought it to the bikeshop, and they cannot find the problem. I have also contacted the person who I bought it from, but he does not speak English, and I don't know if I have understood all he said. I really regret the fact that my blinker does not work, because it is so cool.


    I hope someone can help me with this problem and explain in English where I should look for in solving it, or what to change.

    Hi Thieme, welcome to the Schwalbennest,


    Horn and blinker are powered by an accumulator in your "Schwalbe".
    First have a look to the voltage of this device, when it is not between 6-7 volts, please try to charge it externally.
    The loading current may be around 0,4A.


    If the voltage of the batterie is OK (...but I don't think so because of your weak idle light) have a look to the fuse, located unter the plate behind the handle bar.

    loading the battery external should help for the moment. but i think, there is another problem behind it.


    if you are able to use a screwdriver, check the batterie loading. open the batterycase and proof the momental voltage with a multimeter and notice this value. after this measurement start your engine an proof the voltage once again. it should be about few 100 mV higher than before. if you can can see this voltage-difference, the loadingplant is ok.


    another test would be (if you dont have a multimeter) to connect a lamp instead of the battery. when the motor starts it has to glow.


    if both tests are negativ, the loadingplant is broken, a fuse is defect or there ist a failure in the cables.

    yep, i would also think that your problem is a low battery voltage.
    if the voltage keeps going down although the bat gets loaded when the engine is running (check as totoking described), there can be two reasons for that:
    1) your battery is defect because the voltage has been too low (total discharge -> capacity decreases)
    2) the charging unit is defect. in this special case, the charging itself does work, but the diode inside the charging unit does let the electricity flow in both directions (because it is broken). hence, the battery discharges itself through the diode. you can verify this by checking the diode with a circuit indicator.


    how did you manage to run the schwalbe in NL? i thought all brommer (as i think you call them) must have a maximum speed of 45?

    thank you very much for your replies. It looks very helpful, especially the one about the diode. I will pass this information to the bikestore, see if he can now resolve the problem (I don't have any tools..:()


    Anyway, I will describe the solution on this forum, in case any other non-german speaking Simson Schwalbe rider has the samen problem in the future.

    well, I put a little cilinder in the carburetor which lowered the fuel supply (the handle could only turn 70%) and hence the Mofa could only go 40-45kmph. After it was authorized as a legal vehicle by some bureaucratic agency in the Netherlands, I could insure it and drive with it.


    Clearly, I removed the cilinder, and now it can go fullspeed. Hope I don't get busted though... :)

    :D I was in Holland a few weeks ago (buying some dope :P),
    and there where hundreds of scooters driving about 70kmh.
    They where all driving at the.. eehm
    the cycleway? (where you normally ride your bike in germany) and what really confused me, they all drove without a helmet!?
    Is this quite normal in the netherlands? I really thought those guys must be stoned, some of them almost hit me with their damn scooters, god bless you, you dont stick to such a plastic crap.

    you probably were in Amsterdam, we have too many of the same scooters here. People are vain, so they buy a scooter going only about 30kmph, but maybe they increased the velocity, dunno..

    No, i was in Venlo, a small town with 2much coffeeshops and only a few hundred meters beyond the border to germany :P


    But why the hell dont you need to wear helmets, and why is it allowed to drive at the cycleway? Nobody drives at the road, i dont get it.
    By the way, i wonder if you need a drivers license for those scooters, do you?


    Im thinking of spending my "semester abroad" in the netherlands and i would really enjoy to take my schwalbe with me.

    There are scooters that go 30kmph and you don't need a helmet for that, nor a "brommer"license > it is called a moped, blue license plate. For "real" brommer, yellow license plate, you need a license (either cardriving license or brommer license), and most of the time, you are not allowed on the cycleway.


    I know Venlo a little, it is supposed to be the ugliest city in the Netherlands. If you go to Holland for a year, please don't go there. Better going to Amsterdam. I might be of help, so if you are coming, let me know, my gmail address is "thiemehennis".

    no i wont go to venlo, it really sucks. I also prefer Amsterdam, venlo was just very easy to get some dope and go back home. I dont think theres an university^^
    Its funny to legalize Mariuhana and Mushrooms and allow people to drive without helmet. Hup Holland! :bounce:
