Simson Schwalbe primary drive shaft rough/ratchety.

  • I have a 1972 KR51/1 scooter and I'm removing the engine for restoration. When I removed the chain, the primary drive cog rotates but appears rough and ratchety. Is this normal or do I need to replace the shaft bearings.

Sorry I don't speak German, I hope someone can help in English!

  • Hello,
in my opinion its not normal, that the cog seems rough and ratchety. It should be more like smooth. Does it make any noices? How about the tooth of the cog? Maybe its worn? can u post a picture? It could also be that there is some dirt in the bearing? How long time did this engine not run? Maybe you have to change the bearings?
i hope i could give some "thought simulation" :D
    kind regards
    Finux

  • Thank-you for your reply. I have carefully checked the gearbox and even in gear the shaft moves about 1/4 of a turn and makes a clicking noise. I have decided to split the gearbox and investigate! I will post further my findings.

Thanks for taking the time to post I know that the language makes it difficult!

  • sorry for my bad gramma :D
do you have any radial or axial clearance in your bearings??
Can u feel the ratchet and maybe locate the source of this problem by feeling / hearing?

  • i dont get it exactly... you could dismount your primary pinion and check if this problem is based on primary side or not. so u'll see if the problem is located on your crankshaft or its gearbox sided?

  • Hi Bill,

    welcome to the Schwalbennest.

Great to hear that also in the UK the Simsons are rolling.

The cog should rotate smoothly. Good idea to split the gearbox. At least if you have the knowledge and tools.

    Regards

  • I'm slowly learning with lots of help from U-Tube and the forum! I've just ordered my replacement parts so I can start re-assembly soon although I have several other projects needing my attention.

Thanks for all the information and the friendly welcome.
