how to clean the exaust...

  • For all english (of nederlands) speaking schwalbe lovers...
I am unable to translate or understand the part of the schwalbe manual on how to clean the exaust (auspuff). Is there somebody who can explain me how to do this?

Thanks in advance and greetings from the lonely schwalbe from belgium

  • Ok, let´s give it a try ...

in the back part of the exhaust (the exhaust hat at least 2 parts) you can find the silencer. It consists of 2 iron plates connected with iron pipes. When you´ve got it, you can burn it. Which means to heaten it so long till all dirt has dried an changed the colour into brouwn or gray. Now you can brush of all the brown stuff.
To heaten the silencer you can use a gas burner perfectly.

The rest of the exhaust cant´n be heaten, because the chrome would change its colour into some ugly something.
But you can eliminate the black dirt inside of it with brushes an gasoline. But attention please: This makes al real mess! Be carefull ...

    Good luck!

  • Thats quick! thanks kurt...

I've lived a few months in berlin but i didn't learn enough german to read/write, especially not technical things...
I probably didn't understand it because of the fact that you have to BURN it of, never thought of that. I allready foud out that it makes a mess, took me a while to clean my hands afther i removed the exaust from the schwalbe.
Can i also remove the rounded tube (krummer?) from the exaust and clean there?

    thanks

  • Hello again,

of course you can remove the "Krümmer" - no prroblem, just remove the iron-pice witch connects the "Krümmer" with the exaust.

Than take a long screwdriver, or an old cleaning-brush, or a long wire,..... you can take everything what you find in your garage and fits in the hole! ;)

Just scratch all the dirt away and shake it out!

After cleaning the whole exaust and Krümmer, you can make a long tour by max speed, and all the rest of the dirt mayebe burn away.

    so long,
    good luck

In my mind, you have never to do this. 30-50km with middle or high speed on road and you have the same effect.

I use my SR50 only on very short distances (6km one way at maximum) and I have never do this.

  • Why do you wanna clean you exhaust? Have you got a loss of power? Like baumschubser wrote, mostly it´s not really necessary to clean it. But it´s always good fun to to us a big gas burner in front of your house! :D I´ve done it twice last year.

  • but don't try this in your own garden. your neighbours will love you, because it smokes very strong.:D :D

I have never burnt it out. Normally, i clean the exhaust in a mechanical way. I clean it whith an old toothbrush and/or toiletpaper. That's all.

  • thanks everyone,

Since i have my schwalbe (one year) i never cleaned it or took it appart to check whats there or whats missing (like an airfilter).
The previous owner did a complete repaint but never got into doing the other parts.
It was driving good, but not anymore ;) the engine stops running afther a while (when its hot?). thats the main reason for taking it apart and giving it a good clean, and also for learning how a schwalbe is on the inside.
The exaust looks like a mess to me but maybe thats normal, the uberwurfmutter was broken so there was also a lot of oil flying around, I bought a new one.
So i want to give it a good clean and fix before going to drive more then 5 kilometer.
Just managed to order all the parts from simson-taubert and simson-versand... good service by the way.

    greetings

  • Your bike just runs 5 minutes and after a while you can start it (when it cooled down) without any problems?
first check if the gas runs out of your tank quickly; sometimes the little hole on top of the tank cap is full of dirt (blow it out), that´s why you´ll get a vacuum inside and the gas doesn´t run any more.
but it´s probably the "Kondensator" on your "Grundplatte" (it´s behind the "Schwungscheibe/Polrad"). you can change it in less than half an hour; but you´ll need a special tool to remove the Schwungscheibe: a "Schwungscheiben-Abzieher". It´s not expensive, costs 3-5 euros. hopefully you already ordered it.

  • John, Thanks for the advice.... at first it would run just fine, after some months (driving occasionally) it would only run for 20 minutes and now only for 5 minutes. You can kickstart 100 times but it wont start. When you wait half an hour, it runs again.
So it definitely sounds like what you discribed, only that the running time became shorter and shorter.
I cleaned the "Kraftstoffhahn" and the tank yesterday but they wherent that dirty. For your other advice, i'll first have to analyze whats written there :) but no problem, ill manage...
I guess its in the engine or transmission, the parts that i am not yet ready to dive into ;),i am not only a schwalbe newbie but a bike newbie too

    greetings,
