Hallo leute, I'm from the Netherlands and restoring a Simson Schwalbe KR51/2. The /2 is supposed to have the exhaust on the right, with the m531 motor. My exhaust is to the left... It looks like the (older) M53 motor, but the pictures I've seen of the M53 are slightly different from the one I got. For example: on the right side of the motor the cable on the top right exits out of a corner instead of in the center. So I was hoping you guys might help me identify this motor and/ or the originality of the Simson? Bitte sehr! : Bounce:
kr51/2 motortype?

Hi Anna,
this is a M53 motor in a KR51/1 frame.
Thougt it seems that on the nameplate (?) KR51/2 is written. That would be wrong.
Typical for a KR51/1 frame is the upper fastening for the screw at the cylinder head.
Try to find the VIN on the frame and first compare it with that one on the nameplate.
This number can be found on top of the frame at the left side under the bench.
Second: search the number from the frame here: Liste der Schwalbe-FahrgestellnummernPeter

Thank you George! I will check the serial, good idea! And does anybody know about the differences like the cable? It might help me determine if the motor is real old or if it is a 'newer' version? I thought it might be a M53/1?
-
I'm impressed that you could see that from these pics! I've checked the serial and it seems to be from '82 like on the plate.
-
-
Like peter wrote, your motor ist the real old version m53/1. Your frame ist the old version too.
Sirko -
You have a spezial frame. Your serial number might be right. 1982 the older version of Schwalbe was not built anymore. 1982 was built a charge of frames to swap them to destroyed bikes. Normally these exchange frames had a holder for the brake handle. I cant see this holder on your photos.
Is the serialnumber on the plate the same number you can find on the seatholder lefthandside? Eventually anybody fit a wrong plate?
Sirko -
I don't know where the holder would be located on the frame, but maybe this picture will help?
-
Yes the serial also checks out

Hello Anna and welcome to the nest.
I repeat: the plate with the model designation is faked!
Your frame is an originally old KR51/1 model, for sure.
No second lower engine fastening and no brake handle holder.
Your engine is an M53/1 old version too - no second lower fastening and
the "mysterious cable" from the inside ignition coil.
Here the various kinds of Simson engines: klick
Please, make a nearer photo from the frame-ID-number.
I cant believe it, that this build in 1982.
Sorry for my horrible english

Hello, here are some more pictures. Hopefully they will help identify what moped I have...
-
And some more.. The Fahrgest. Nr. is the same on the top of the frame, where the seat sits on
-
Hello Anna
Take some looks at my /2 frame to see the differences to your /1 frame:
> the front engine fastening = /2 no - /1 yes
> second engine fastening rear low
(hole in pit near the stepboard-holder) = /2 yes - /1 no
> break linkage holder
(second tube down on the engine holderblock) = /2 yes - /1 no
> the suspension fitting is higher on /2 for longer (strut ?) version
Now thrust us - you have an KR51/1 with an faked ID-number.
I have noticed in the photos are other things. The battery compartment seems to be incomplete. The passenger footpegs are not to the rear swingarm.
Moreover, the starter lock cover on the lamp mask is mounted upside down.
My opinion - for legal drive you buy an other /1 frame
with real number and model plate.
Best regards
Kai
(Sorry for my horrible english) -

Hahahah Kai genial! I also use google translate It won't translate moin though, which I see a lot here. Some kind of unofficial greeting I guess.
I've checked on the internet if it is registered as stolen, and it isn't so it won't be a problem driving the Simson.
In the Netherlands it's very difficult to find a new (registered) frame and/ or then have it officially approved by the RDW. So I think I can best continue to restoring this one and maybe keep my eyes open on finding a new KR51/1 frame in the future like you suggested. However, Simson is not as popular here so finding parts is hard.Es ist nicht perfekt, aber ich arbeite dran
I will post an update of the finished moped when it's ready. It's almost ready to get a new color on!! Very Excited!!!Groeten, Anna

I have another question. I was planning on installing the bremsstange, but now that the exhaust is on the other side... Is it still possible? I'm such a newbie, I know
-
Hello Anna
That you have correctly identified - "Moin" is a localized form of greeting.
If you still decide to use another frame, seeking some games on ebay.Deutschland. Otherwise you can find also a big issue "dealers and workshops" in the forum. In the event that you need replacement parts.greetings

On your model, there is no brake rod.
You have a Bowden cable. You definitely need "The Book".
